Winter Tourism in Nepal- Gokyo Lake

Nepal has a natural geographical structure because of many high mountain peaks, swift water, high hills, rocky terrain, dense forest, and frozen lakes. this natural aspect opened Nepal to an adrenaline rush with various adventure sports such as white water rafting, bungee jumping, paragliding, rock climbing, mountain biking, ice climbing, sky diving, canyoning, ziplining, skiing, mountain flights, and jungle safari. Nepal is one of the best destinations for adventure tourism and adventure sports.

VNY 2020 secretariat and trekking agencies association of Nepal (TAAN) came up with the announcement of organizing an ice skating and ice hockey event over the Gokyo lake at an altitude of 4,790m situated in the Sagarmatha national park. region of Nepal on 14th February 2020. a team of experts from the USA made a feasibility study at the frozen Gokyo lake, they remain frozen from December to march providing the opportunity for such sports to be held. Mountain tourism mostly takes breaks during this time of the year but this would boost winter tourism.

Athletes from Canada, the USA, Russia, and India, including former olympian gold medallists, alpine figure skaters, ice hockey athletes, and climbers performed ice skating and played a friendly match of ice hockey. this is probably the highest point where such an event took place for the first time in Nepal. we expect that adventure sports like ice skating and ice hockey could be new adventure tourism products in Nepal for the off seasons or the winter seasons and attract the rest of the world. Everest region lakes are frozen from December to March so Ice hockey in Gokyo Lake can be played during this off-season period. These four months are known as OFF seasons in Nepal mountain tourism so the Gokyo Lake Ice Hockey competition can be played at this time.

Well, Ice Hockey and Ice Skating are completely new games for Nepal to this date. There are no indoor and outdoor Ice Hockey and Ice-Skating games in Nepal.
